A History of the Kingswood Team Ministry
Kingswood Chase, for many years a royal forest, became a mining area from the C16th and was notorious for the lawlessness of the local colliers. John Wesley and George Whitfield preached here with great effect. More recent industries have included the manufacture of boots and shoes and Douglas motorcycles.
Holy Trinity Church (1819-21) was the first of the Commissioners' (Waterloo) Churches to be consecrated. In 1898 the chancel was rebuilt and an organ chamber added. Chancel wall paintings of 1907-8 and a splendid East window (1909) by James P B Young. Beautiful tapestry kneelers by church members. The story of an elephant buried in the churchyard continues to excite interest. But please don't ask us where it's buried!
The Church of the Ascension (1913) was built as a mission church and is in Tudor Perpendicular style. A stained glass panel, depicting the descent of the Holy Spirit as a dove was recently installed in the West window.
